How to limit number of words allowed in search box?!

Hi,
How to limit number of words allowed in search box?!
Searching for too much words in same time gives this error message :
"Request-URI Too Long
The requested URL's length exceeds the capacity limit for this server." .

How many characters do you have to enter before it does this?
I just tested with a 500 character search phrase and didn't see this issue.
Might be a problem on your server?
